✧ On the guardians
Imagine if every bird species had its own assigned female guardian whose job it was to protect that species. They call themselves the ‘Fated Feathers’.
Each guardian has the ability to transform into the bird species they have been assigned to protect. In this bird form, they can only communicate with their peers and other guardians.
As long as their perspective species exists in the human world, they usually take bird form to enter it. There, they usually stay close to their species - but a little stroll here and there wouldn't hurt, right? You may have encountered a guardian without even knowing it. The pigeon that gave you a funny look the other day? Maybe it was a guardian. The seagull that stole your first French fry? Could have been a guardian, too.
Of course, there is also the possibility of entering the human world in their guardian form, but no matter how hard they try, they can never completely hide their bird features fully - and that would certainly gain attention.
At birth, a guardian is given a title (example Felicity: ‘Wings of Hope’), under which motto they keep watch over their species from then on. If a bird species becomes extinct, the guardian is given the new title ‘Wings of Extinction’ and a monument, usually a stone figure, dedicated to that bird species will be build.
If a guardian decides to give up their role, they are reborn as a human and have no memory of their life as a guardian, but may have an inexplicable affinity for that particular bird species. A new guardian appears shortly thereafter.

✧ On the world
Each guardian lives in their own safe space above the clouds, hidden from curious eyes (both human and animal). Here, they can recharge or meet up with others, if needed. Good thing that most guardians can fly in their bird form, because the individual locations are quite far apart. However, the guardians mostly stay with the bird species they protect and are rarely found in their safe space.
Once a bird species goes extinct, the guardian of that species is not allowed to enter the human world in their bird form, confining them to their personal space.The overall world of the guardians above the clouds thus consists of the respective houses of the individual guardians, one per species, several hangout spots, and at the highest point is the ‘Memoria,’ a giant building, the birthplace of the Guardians, but also the memorial to those species that did not survive in the human world.
